Waste collectors steal truck parts at Kirikiri Terminal

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port

Eight waste collectors, also known as Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators, were on Wednesday, arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing heavy truck scrap parts at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT).

The PSP operators are Ifeyinwa Obiora (42), Adeyeye Akinkunmi Oluwaseyi (29), Ganiyu Adeosun (42), Sanni Abdullahi (42), Mubarak Musa (21), Ibrahim Lado (22), Saifullahi Bashir (21) and Emmanuel Emunike (24). They are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The port prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on December 14, 2018 at about 11:30am at Royal Salt Company Limited, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Phase 1, Apapa.

“The defendants conspired together to steal heavy truck scrap part valued at N120,000 property of Royal Salt Company Limited,” Esebamen said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

The Magistrate, O.S Abioye granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the matter till January 14, 2019 for mention.
