Woman, others in court for smoking Indian hemp at Apapa

The police on Friday arraigned a lady, Mariam Akande (18) and three men namely, Olalekan Qudus (30), Ibrahim Mohammed (20) and Olusegun Ogunyemi (18) for smoking weeds suspected to be Indian hemp in public.

Akande, Qudus, Mohammed and Ogunyemi are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, dangerous weapons, breach of peace and smoking weeds.

The prosecutor, Inspector Augustine Ejembi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on September 12, 2018 at about 11:30am at Railway Line, Ijora-Badia, Apapa.

“The defendants and others still at large conspired together to have in their possession dangerous weapons such as cutlass and knife. They did manage unlawful society by committing act of violence as well as disturbing and encouraging disturbance of peace,” Ejembi said.

The prosecutor added that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by smoking weeds suspected to be Indian hemp in public.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 412, 329 (b), 56 (b) and 168 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Upon the non-guilty plea of all the defendants, Magistrate O.M Ajayi granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety each.

Each surety, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the matter till September 25, 2018 for mention.
