The much-anticipated 2024 edition of the Ships & Ports Maritime Cup Competition began with an electrifying opening ceremony on Tuesday, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
The event, held at the Stable Sports Complex in Surulere, Lagos, saw all 12 teams in vibrant displays, along with an impressive lineup of dignitaries, industry leaders, and enthusiastic supporters, each reflecting the rich heritage of the Nigerian maritime industry.
The opening ceremony welcomed notable figures, including Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), represented by Mr. Oladipo Fatai, General Manager of the MD’s Office. Also in attendance were the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Barrister Pius Akuta, represented by Mrs. Adaku Okam, the Council’s Director of Human Resources Management; and former National President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olayiwola Shittu, alongside representatives of all participating organisations.
In his address, Dr. Dantsoho expressed his pride in the spirit of sportsmanship that the Maritime Cup fosters, celebrating its role in strengthening bonds across the maritime community. Represented by Mr. Oladipo Fatai, he commended Ships & Ports Communication Company for their dedication to the 15-year old tournament, highlighting how it has consistently promoted friendship and unity in the sector.
“NPA is proud to support this tournament and stands committed to upholding the legacy of cooperation it represents,” Dantsoho stated, further wishing his team, the defending champions, a successful campaign.
Barrister Pius Akuta, represented by Mrs. Adaku Okam, added his voice to the commendations, acknowledging the tournament as a platform for nurturing collaboration among stakeholders. “The Nigerian Shippers’ Council remains committed to supporting this event, which plays a vital role in fostering teamwork across the maritime sector,” he said, urging participants to exhibit discipline and team spirit throughout the competition.
Mr. Modupe Marcus, representing Princess Vicky Haastrup, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of ENL Consortium, expressed appreciation to the event’s organisers, sponsors, and volunteers. He emphasised that the Maritime Cup exemplifies unity and teamwork, qualities essential for the sector’s growth.
“This competition serves as a reminder that we are all part of a single maritime community, working together for the betterment of Nigeria,” he remarked, encouraging everyone present to embrace the values of fairness and camaraderie.
The ceremony also featured a memorable moment with Prince Olayiwola Shittu, former President of ANLCA, whose 74th birthday coincided with the tournament’s opening day. Expressing deep gratitude, Shittu spoke warmly of his long-standing friendship with Dr. Bolaji Akinola, CEO of Ships & Ports Communication Company.
“I have never cut a birthday cake before. This is my first, and it’s truly special to celebrate it here with my maritime family,” Prince Shittu said. He fondly reminisced about leading ANLCA to victory in 2015, and reflected on the tournament’s evolution over the years.
Ships & Ports CEO Dr. Bolaji Akinola congratulated all teams on their participation, reminding them of the tournament’s core values. “The Maritime Cup has consistently delivered on its mission to foster unity, collaboration, and healthy competition within our sector,” he stated, emphasising the event’s role in strengthening industry ties. “In the face of evolving challenges and opportunities, this sense of unity is crucial as we work toward a brighter future for Nigeria’s maritime industry.”
The competition kicked off with a spirited match between defending champions, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and 2010 champions, Micura Stevedoring Services.
The NPA team showcased their prowess early on, with Eletu Olamilekan scoring the opening goal in the 12th minute. Their momentum continued into the second half, with Mustapha Mani sealing their 2-0 victory in the 68th minute.
The match drew a crowd of passionate supporters who cheered their teams with great enthusiasm, setting the tone for an exhilarating tournament ahead.
The tournament continues today. The Nigerian Navy will face Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL) at noon, followed by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) taking on ENL Consortium at 2 p.m. The day’s final match will feature a face-off between five-time champions Nigeria Customs Service and APM Terminals Apapa, kicking off at 4 p.m. All matches are set to be played at the NPA Sports Ground, where spectators are invited to enjoy a showcase of talent and teamwork that transcends competition.
“As the Ships & Ports Maritime Cup progresses, we look forward to witnessing not only the competitive spirit of the games but also the spirit of unity that has become the tournament’s hallmark.
