29-year old in court for wearing Nigerian Navy apparel

A 29-year-old man, identified as Utip Obong Michael, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly wearing a Nigerian Navy branded T-shirt and camouflage trousers in Lagos.

Michael is facing a two-count charge of impersonation and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Obongha told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 18, 2019 at about 7:30pm at Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos.

“The defendant was arrested for wearing the Nigerian Navy T-shirt and trousers camouflage properties of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Obongha said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by going about the streets of Lagos wearing military camouflage knowing fully well that he is not a member of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 77 and 168 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Magistrate K.A Ariyo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the matter till April 18, 2019 for mention.
