APM Terminals launches 5S initiative

As part of its strategic plan, APM Terminals Bahrain held a week-long event to introduce the ‘5S in store’ initiative to its employees, recently. The 5-step initiative is to improve the productivity of both plant and equipment at the Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP).

The objective is to have a systematic approach to ensure a clean, tidy environment and create an optimal organized work area. 12 employees from the Technical Department, Continuous Improvement (CI) Section and six members from Operations-Container Terminal and General Cargo and the Procurement departments attended the workshop.

This initiative, which is a step forward in the Technical Productive Maintenance (TPM), will drive improvements in equipment specifications, maintenance and work with the suppliers to bolster safety, cost and efficiency out of the equipment.

The highlight of the initiative was the insight gained on how to enhance comfort, efficiency, safety and productivity of equipment; reduce space in racks, reduce searching through categorizing parts by function, promote flow and enhance visualization using floor line, color coding and labelling.

The event concluded with a presentation to the management team, which was followed by a walkthrough in the store.

APM Terminals Bahrain applies the latest innovation and technology to improve safety performance at the Port, and the company’s objectives depend on the highest standards of safety. One of the few multi-purpose ports in the region, APM Terminals Bahrain provides a wide range of services at KBSP, including the provision of sea freight, shipping, and logistical services to the highest international standards in the industry.
