Clearing agent dupes woman in Apapa

Fake travel agent docked for N265,000 visa fraud

A 25-year-old clearing agent, Yahya Sani, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly duping a woman of N76,000 in Apapa.

Sani is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on November 13, 2019 at No 14, Calcutta Crescent, Apapa.

“The defendant obtained the sum of N76,000 with pretence of helping one Hauwa Blessing to transfer it into her account, knowing same to be false,” Ekpo said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314(3) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

Magistrate Taiwo Popoola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the matter till January 14, 2020 for mention.
