Court remands truck driver for manslaughter

An Apapa Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday remanded a 40-year-old truck driver, Chukwuma Okechi, for allegedly causing the death of one Gabriel Isioma Danladi along Mile 2-Apapa Expressway.

Okechi is facing a one-count charge of manslaughter.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Kolade Tedunjaye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 2, 2019 at about 3pm along Mile 2/Apapa Expressway by Mile 2 Bridge.

“The defendant being the driver in charge of Mack truck with registration number BDG 654 XL drove same vehicle on a public highway and caused the death of one Gabriel Isioma Danladi,” Tedunjaye said.

According to her, the offence is punishable under section20 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State 2012.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate B.M Amore granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

He ordered the duplicate of the case file be transferred to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

He adjourned the case till July 29, 2019 for mention.
