Covid-19: Port police decongests cells 

 

In a bid to curtail the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Commissioner of Police, Western Ports Command, Cyril Okoro, has directed the decongesting of detention cells at the Apapa and Tin Can ports. 

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Collins Dibie, who disclosed this in a chat with SHIPS & PORTS, said the directive to decongest the cells was in compliance with the order of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. 

“The Commissioner of Police acted on the instruction from the Inspector General of Police that all cells should be decongested. In fact, our cells have been decongested and sanitized. Persons with minor offences can never be detained and locked down again,” Dibie, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said. 

“The Commissioner of Police summoned a security meeting of DPOs, HODs and other officers giving them instruction based on the directive from the Inspector General of Police to ensure due precautionary measures in this era of coronavirus. 

“We have been directed to ensure frequent washing of the hands with soap using running water, use alcohol-based sanitizer often and maintain social distancing in the course of our duty.”
