Customs generated N833.3bn in 2013

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated a total of about N833.3 billion in revenue last, year, according to figures released by the agency.

Of the total amount, revenue from levies accounted for about N329.1 billion, while import, excise duties, fees and special levies totalled about N504.2 billion in the period under review.
The revenue agency had the highest collections in December with a total of about N85.4 billion, while it recorded the lowest revenue in February with N60.7 billion.

The details of the revenue figures were contained in the maiden edition of the NCS’s ‘Naija Customs’ publication, which was launched on Monday as part of activities marking the 2014 International Customs Day celebration.

The NCS said it also recorded 8,141 seizures worth over N8.5 billion last year, while the highest seizure worth about N1 billion was made in March.
A breakdown of the seizures showed that the number of vehicles seized within the period dropped to 1, 473 with duties valued at N1.5 billion compared to 2,026 valued at N1.3 billion in 2012.

In addition, the number of rice seizures grew from 624 bags (N168.5 million) in 2012 to 2,528 bags valued at N949.4 million in 2013.

Other seizures within the period include textile materials, valued at about N1.4 billion; poultry (N1.4 billion); hard currency (N4.9 million); sugar (N2.4 million); vegetable oil (about N184.8 million); general merchandise (N1.7 billion); and used tyres valued at N120.8 million.
There were, however, eight seizures for arms and ammunition with unknown monetary worth.
Others seizures were pharmaceutical and medicals (N643.5 million); petroleum products (about N2.7); motor cycles (about N22.2 million); furniture (N282.9 million) among others.
