In a determined effort to curb the persistent and tragic occurrences of boat accidents across Nigeria, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a specialized committee dedicated to the prevention of boat mishaps.
Recognizing the pivotal role that the nation’s waterways play in commerce, transportation, and the sustenance of livelihoods, Oyetola emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring their safety and efficiency, crucial for the advancement of Nigeria’s blue economy.
He underscored the urgent necessity to halt the devastating trend of boat accidents, which have resulted in substantial losses of both lives and property.
He said the establishment of the committee is in direct alignment with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” reflecting a commitment to prioritizing maritime safety.
The committee, under the leadership of Bola Oyebamiji, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of commercial boat operations throughout Nigeria.
Its mission involves identifying the fundamental causes of boat accidents and formulating sustainable solutions to prevent future tragedies.
The committee’s membership comprises Adams Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways at the ministry, who will serve as Secretary, alongside representatives from state governments, boat operators, marine safety experts, and academia, ensuring a broad spectrum of expertise.
Oyebamiji conveyed the committee’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate, affirming that safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways is non-negotiable and that NIWA has been revitalized to execute its responsibilities with uncompromising dedication.
