Ikechukwu Chika Onyemekara, the newly appointed spokesperson for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), brings extensive experience in marketing and public relations.
He holds both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing.
Onyemekara’s career with the NPA began in 1992 as a Marketing Officer, where he quickly developed a strong understanding of the maritime industry. His interpersonal skills and ability to engage with key stakeholders led to his transition into strategic roles within the NPA’s Commercial Department.
Acknowledging his talent for people management, the NPA soon redeployed Onyemekara to the Public Affairs Division. His results-driven approach and consistent performance earned him the role of Technical Assistant Protocol, where he managed media relations, diplomatic engagements, and government relations on behalf of several NPA Managing Directors.
This role solidified his reputation as an invaluable asset to the organisation.
Onyemekara has also represented the NPA on the international stage, including engagements with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where he participated in working groups such as the Editorial and Technical (E&T) Group for the IMSBC Code. He has attended numerous national and international capacity-building workshops, further expanding his expertise and influence in the field.
An avid reader and traveller, Onyemekara is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and actively engages with the alumni network of the Federal Government College, Kaduna. Before his recent appointment, he served as Assistant General Manager, Corporate & Strategic Communications, and Technical Assistant Protocol to the Managing Director.
