Man cuts off policeman’s ear in Apapa

A 23-year-old man, identified as Banjo Adeniye was on Thursday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting two policemen and cutting off the ear of one of them in the Apapa area of Lagos.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Kolade Tedunjaye told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 26, 2018 at about 5:30pm at Bonber Hotel, located at No 9, Orizu Lane, Ajegunle, Apapa.

“The defendant conspired with others to unlawfully assault one Sergeant Ikechukwu Konyehi and Sergeant Chikwe Odimbu attached to Layeni Police Station by using stones, planks to inflict injuries on their heads and all over their bodies,” Ms. Tedunjaye said.

The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant inflicted wound on Sergeant Konyehi by cutting off his right ear when he was performing his lawful duty.

According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate O.S. Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

He adjourned the case till May 23, 3018 for mention.
