The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced an extension of its verification exercise aimed at recovering unpaid import duties on privately owned aircraft that were illegally imported into the country. Initially set to conclude on 14th October 2024, the exercise will now continue until 14th November 2024, according to a statement released on Monday by NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada.
This extension provides additional time for aircraft operators who have expressed a willingness to regularise their import duties. The NCS emphasised that the extension aligns with its commitment to fostering transparency and accountability within the aviation sector.
Aircraft operators are encouraged to take advantage of this window to comply with the legal requirements for private aircraft importation, thereby avoiding potential sanctions after the new deadline.
In his statement, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi reaffirmed the NCS’s dedication to enforcing import duty regulations and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation industry. He also thanked stakeholders for their cooperation during the process and urged continued compliance with customs laws.
This verification exercise is part of the NCS’s broader efforts to strengthen control over illegal imports across various sectors, with particular attention now directed towards the aviation industry.
