The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has received approval to recruit 3,927 officers in 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance trade facilitation and support the nation’s economic recovery. This decision was highlighted during the 61st quarterly board meeting of the agency, held on Wednesday, December 18, at the Customs House in Maitama, Abuja.
The meeting followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presentation of the 2025 budget to the National Assembly, tagged “A Budget of Restoration.” The budget outlines an ambitious ₦48 trillion expenditure target, with ₦35 trillion projected in revenue. The NCS is expected to play a critical role in achieving this target, having already generated over ₦5 trillion by November 2024.
Minister of Finance, Olawale Edun, commended the NCS for its remarkable performance and the significant impact of reforms introduced by President Tinubu.
“The NCS and other revenue bodies have performed remarkably well,” he stated, attributing the success to the ongoing reforms.
In addition to the recruitment of new officers, the board approved special promotions for top-performing personnel to bridge gaps and further enhance the agency’s efficiency.
The government also plans to secure concessionary loans, grants, and development support to cover the remaining ₦13 trillion needed for the budget.
Edun praised the NCS for its excellence in suppressing smuggling and fostering trade, emphasizing the importance of these efforts for national growth and job creation.
He urged Customs officers to remain committed to national goals, highlighting the agency’s pivotal role in poverty reduction and economic development.
