A spokesman for the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Monday said there was no incursion by a Spanish warship in Gibraltar over the weekend.
The Spanish warship had ordered at least two commercial vessels, the Ivor Accord and the Great Victory to sail away from anchorages in British waters near Gibraltar on Sunday.
Both vessels were anchored awaiting orders in waters under the control of the Gibraltar Port Authority.
The Spanish warship was challenged by the British navy and it sailed through Gibraltar waters slowly and out into the strait.
“There was no incursion on this occasion. We are certain of our sovereignty over the whole of Gibraltar, including British -Gibraltar territory waters, and any incursions are a violation of sovereignty, but not a threat to it,” the spokesman said.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and headland, on Spain’s south coast. It’s dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar.
