Underscoring the crisis facing the shipbuilding industry, just 300 newbuildings have been booked year-to-date according classification society DNV GL.
CEO of DNV GL, Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen told a media briefing at Posidonia 2016 that only 300 newbuildings totaling 11million gross tons had been ordered in the year-to-date.
Of these orders, valemax VLOCs accounted for 60% in terms of the total tonnage.
He noted that this was very challenging for yards, suppliers and other related business segments.
However, Ørbeck-Nilssen said, “If you look at the bigger picture there is still overcapacity, so it is a good thing.”
