Customs confronts revenue leakages
… Recovers N1.27bn in 9 months

Confronting incidences of revenue leakages headlong, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recovered the princely sum of N1, 273,940,223.40 by post clearance audit (PCA) in the nine-month period, January to September, 2012, according to statistics obtained from the Customs Headquarters by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
The NCS defines PCA as “structured examination of business subsequent to the exit of same from the Customs control mainly to facilitate trade and ensure compliance to import and export guidelines.”
March recorded the highest monthly recoveries during the review period at N199, 778,037.00, February placing second place with N165,758,103.00, followed by April’s N160,894,248.40.

The other monthly recoveries in descending order of volume during the review period, include: September, N157, 581,620.00; May, N154,575,661.00; and August, N141,680,736.
Others are: June, N104, 469,167.00; July, N95,413,837.00; and January, N93,788,814.00.
The NCS stated: “Conclusively, the proper and effective implementation of Port Clearance Audit will not only enable the Customs Service earn more revenue for government, but will also create a conducive working and business environment that will improve compliance level.”
