Russian general cargo ship sinks off Japan

Panama-flagged Russian general cargo vessel City ran aground on a breakwater approaching Sakata port in Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture over the weekend.

According to local reports, following the grounding, strong currents and wind caused the 7,001 dwt vessel to drift and hit rocks, resulting in significant hull damage, and the ship began to list to starboard before sinking.

The 18-man crew, comprised of 14 Russians and four Bangladeshis, were safely evacuated by a Japanese Coastguard helicopter. No pollution was reported.

Authorities are currently undertaking an investigation into the accident, with salvage operations to begin when the adverse weather clears.
