Shanghai retains world’s top container port crown

Shanghai International Port

In 2022, container volume at Shanghai port exceeded 47.3 million TEU, maintaining its crown as the world’s number one container port for 14 consecutive years.

However the Chinese port only saw marginal growth over 2021 when it handled 47 million TEU.

As at end of November 2022, Shanghai port’s largest rival, Singapore had handled 34.02 million TEU.

Playing a key role in Belt and Road Initiative and the integrated development of Yangtze river delta, Shanghai port has deepened cooperation with other ports and promoted cooperation between port and shipping lines.

The newly opened Northeast Asia Empty Container Distribution center effectively improved service capacity for the industry.

To bring region advantages into full play, Shanghai port newly established or operated several container companies at Huai’an, Lianyungang, Jiangxi, Wuhan and Lvsi, jointly providing comprehensive services for the nation’s dual circulation strategy.
