Singapore’s 2022 piracy incidents hit 7-year high

Sea robbery and piracy related incidents in the Singapore Strait rose to a seven-year high in 2022 but in contrast, the possibility of attacks by the Abu Sayyaf Group has declined considerably in the Sulu-Celebes Seas, prompting a moderation of threat assessment there, ReCAAP said on Tuesday.

ReCAAP (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia) is a multilateral agreement between 16 countries in Asia, concluded in November 2004 and includes the RECAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC), an initiative for facilitating the dissemination of piracy-related information.

ReCAAP’s data is very closely tracked by commercial shipping companies, security officials, maritime analysts and ship and cargo insurance providers because it has a bearing on the overall risk assessment and insurance premium.

According to ReCAAP, 65% of all incidents in Asia last year were in the Singapore Straits.
