The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has urged global shipping leader Maersk to gradually resume its vessel transits through the Canal, reaffirming the waterway’s pivotal role as one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors.
According to local media reports, the appeal was made by SCA Chairperson, Osama Rabie, during a meeting with Denmark’s Ambassador to Egypt, Lars Bo Møller, and a visiting Danish delegation at the Authority’s headquarters in Ismailia.
The discussions centred on strengthening cooperation and exploring new avenues for joint development between the SCA and Maersk, particularly in light of ongoing global trade challenges and efforts to enhance maritime efficiency.
Rabie highlighted several recent milestones, including the imminent inauguration of the expanded Suez Canal Container Terminal in East Port Said — a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at increasing the Canal’s capacity, competitiveness, and logistical performance.
He emphasised that such projects demonstrate Egypt’s commitment to maintaining the Canal’s position as a world-class trade gateway.
Møller commended the longstanding partnership between Denmark and the SCA, praising Egypt’s continued investment in developing the Canal’s facilities and operational resilience.
He reaffirmed Maersk’s strategic interest in the route, describing the Suez Canal as “the main gateway for global trade.”
The Ambassador also noted that Maersk is carefully monitoring security and navigational conditions in the Red Sea and will fully resume regular transits once circumstances permit.
Both parties reiterated their shared commitment to promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable global shipping operations through enhanced collaboration and technological innovation.
