Two clearing agents, Monday Izuchukwu (38) and Kenechukwu Okoye (34), were on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N6.1 million from an importer at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.
The port prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen told the court that the defendants committed the offences on February 21, 2019 at about 10:30am.
“The defendants conspired together to obtain the sum of N6,100,000 from one Edje Emmanuel under the pretence to clear a container containing vehicles and spare parts out of the ports,” Esebamen said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendants, who are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, false pretence and stealing, pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate O.M Ajayi granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two responsible sureties in like sum.
The sureties are required to furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State.
She adjourned the case till April 30, 2019 for mention.
