Two die as explosion rocks Italian port

Two people lost their lives in an explosion of a gas tank at Livorno’s industrial port, situated on Italy’s western coast, on Wednesday.

The blast was reported at 14:30 p.m., local time, according to the firefighting officials, who dispatched their personnel on the spot to secure the neighboring tanks.

Local media said there was no fire after the explosion. The affected tank was however severely damaged.

The two deceased workers were reportedly conducting maintenance operations when the blast occurred.

The tank, situated inside the Costiero Nero depot at the port, reportedly contained ethyl acetate.
