A 42-year-old woman, Adenike Tijani, and a 29-year-old man, Yusuf Oyee, have been arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly smuggling six parcels of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp into Kirikiri Prison.
Tijani and Oyee are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful possession and smuggling.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyabosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on October 21, 2018 at 11:52am at Medium Security Prison, Kirikiri Town, Lagos.
“The defendants conspired together with others at large by having in their possession six parcels of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp,” Onaiwu said
The prosecutor also said that the defendants smuggled six parcels of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp into prison with intent to facilitate the escape of a prisoner.
According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 359 and 107 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
Magistrate O. S Abioye granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till November 13, 2018 for mention.
