Clearing agent defrauds importer of N3.8m

A 43-year-old clearing agent, Babagana Shetima, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding an importer of N3,830,000 at Apapa port.

Shetima is facing a two-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Feddy Asu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in the month of August 2018 at Apapa.

“The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N3,830,000 from one Bello Aminu with the pretence to clear his container from Apapa port, knowing same to be false,” Asu said.

The prosecutor added that the defendant stole the sum of N3,830,000 from one Bello Aminu.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314(a) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Magistrate M.O Olubi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate must be blood relative to the defendant or civil servant not below Grade Level 05 or managerial position in a reputable company.

The sureties must furnish the court with proof of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the matter till December 10, 2018 for mention.
