A 52-year-old clearing agent, Saheed Balogun, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing two cars valued at N2.2 million in Lagos.
Balogun is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and forgery.
The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 26, 2018 at about 10am at Clarion Bonded Terminal, Alakija Satellite Town, Lagos.
“The defendant conspired with others at large to steal one 2003 Toyota Corolla unregistered fairly used car valued at N1.2 million and one 2003 Toyota Camry fairly used car valued at N1 million. Total value of stolen cars valued at N2.2 million property of Clarion Bonded Terminal,” Aigbokhan said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant forged Nigeria Customs Service clearing documents to clear one 2003 Toyota Corolla car and one 2003 Toyota Camry car at Clarion Bonded Terminal.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 287 and 365 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
Magistrate Joy Ugbomoiko granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties who must provide evidence of gainful employment.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case till October 4, 2018 for mention.
