The executives of the Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA) have asked their President, Capt. Niyi Labinjo to step aside over his involvement in a $6.5million ship purchase scandal involving him, his wife Bola and an indigenous firm, Acenk Marine and Energy Services Ltd.
The scandal was exclusively reported by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY in its edition of Monday 26th January, 2015.
In a statement sent exclusively to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY last night, publicity secretary of NISA, Engr. Emmanuel Ilori said the decision for Labinjo to step aside was taken unanimously by the association’s executives.
“The Exco of NISA met at an emergency session on 4th February 2015 to review ongoing allegations involving the President of NISA Capt Dada Labinjo (Rtd.).
“The Exco unanimously agreed that there is urgent need for the president to concentrate on clearing his involvement on the matter.
“The Nigerian Shipowners Association must continue to make progress on its aims and objectives such that will ensure industry confidence, create jobs and ensure that the maritime industry takes its rightful position as a major contributor to the national economy.
“The EXCO therefore unanimously decided that the President Capt. Dada Olaniyi Labinjo should step aside,” Ilori said in an email he sent to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
He said the association’s Vice President, Mr. Aminu Umar will now assume the role of Acting President.
