Suez Canal traffic data shows that 284 ships transited the canal, with a total load of 14.34million tonnes, from 19 to 24 August 2016.
An average of 47.33 ships transited the canal per day during that period, with an average load of 2.73million tonnes per day. The average load per ship was about 50,490 tonnes during that period.
Compared to July 2015, before the inauguration of the New Suez Canal, the average daily number of transiting vessels totalled 47, with an average load of 2.76million tonnes per day.
Four major Danish container ships—Mogens Maersk, Mary Maersk, Mayview Maersk, and Munkebo Maersk—transited the canal carrying 200,360 tonnes each.
The number of vessels that passed through the new canal coming from the west through the northern entrance was 135, with a daily average of 27 vessels, and a total load of 7.65million tonnes, recording a daily average of 1.27million tonnes.
Meanwhile, 149 ships transited the canal coming from the south, with a daily average of 25 vessels, and a total load of 9.26million tonnes, recording a daily average of 1.54million tonnes.
Vice Admiral Mohab Mamish, chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority, announced—during the anniversary of opening the new canal—that revenues have increased since January 2016 until August by 4%, recording a total of $3.2billion.
Cargo load is the main measure of shipping traffic in the Suez Canal and the calculated transit fees.
