The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Friday supervised the signing of a landmark agreement on minimum standards of condition of service for workers in the shipping industry.
The historic agreement, brokered by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), was signed by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and the Shipping, Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) in Lagos on Friday.
Oyetola said the pivotal event marks yet another achievement in the Ministry’s commitment to ensure that the foundations of the Marine and Blue Economy are built on principles of fairness, respect, and sustainability.
He noted that the maritime sector is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy and it is of utmost importance that the workforce is treated with dignity and provided with the necessary conditions to thrive.
He emphasised that the agreement tagged “Minimum Standards of Condition of Service For Workers in the Shipping Industry” is a reflection of the trajectory of the present administration and a testament to the collective commitment to uphold the rights and welfare of workers.
He said with the establishment of the minimum condition of service, the Federal Government is enhancing workers’ welfare to enjoy decent working conditions, fair remuneration, job security and access to necessary welfare benefits.
He also noted that the agreement will encourage fair competition and foster trust and cooperation by creating a uniform standard that will guarantee level playing field among employers in the maritime sector, thereby discouraging exploitation and promoting ethical practices.
The Minister enjoined the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria to remain steadfast and vibrant in advocating for the rights of workers by ensuring compliance with the agreed standards, while the government continues to provide the enabling environment for compliance and continuous improvement.
Akutah Pius Ukeyima, the Executive Secretary/CEO of Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) commended the Minister for providing the leadership that led to the historic deal for the workers.
He commended the leadership of MWUN for its refined approach to the fight for the welfare of workers.
Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General, Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) said the agreement will end unfair labour practices and improve working conditions in the maritime sector.
“On behalf of our teeming members, all contributors to the success of this struggle like the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola; Chairman, Shipping, Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA), Mrs Boma Alabi SAN; the Executive Secretary/CEO of Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Akutah Pius Ukeyima, and the immediate past Executive Secretary of the Council, Hon. Emmanuel Jime for their efforts in facilitating the process in spite of the hitches encountered,” he said.
“This minimum standard of condition of service for workers in the shipping industry is the highest in any industry in Nigeria,” Boma Alabi said while delivering her remarks.
