The Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd), has reportedly announced his resignation from office, despite having over a year left in his eight-year second term.
Effedua revealed that his decision to step down was due to personal reasons. He reportedly submitted his resignation to the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, emphasising that he believed it was the right time to move on.
“My reasons are personal; I believe the time is right to move on,” he explained. “I have fulfilled my mandate to set new standards at the nation’s premier maritime training institution. It’s best to leave when the ovation is loudest, not when you’re asked to leave.”
During his tenure, Commodore Effedua was instrumental in transforming the Academy. He spearheaded a comprehensive overhaul of the institution by addressing financial inefficiencies, improving cadet hostels and previously substandard feeding arrangements, and enhancing staff orientation programs for both academic and non-academic staff. Additionally, he expanded and refurbished staff quarters, completed several abandoned and outstanding projects, and initiated the construction of new structures to elevate the Academy’s status in line with international standards.
Commodore Effedua’s departure marks the end of a significant era of reform and progress at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria.
