U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump has nominated former Congressman Sean Duffy as the next Secretary of Transportation, sparking discussions across the transportation and maritime industries. The nomination, announced on the heels of Trump’s electoral victory, signals a fresh but unconventional approach to leadership at the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Duffy, a former representative of Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district (2011–2019), brings a varied professional background to the role. His career spans politics, law, and media, including serving as District Attorney in Ashland County, Wisconsin, and a stint on the Financial Services Committee in Congress. More recently, he co-hosted Fox Business’ “The Bottom Line” and gained early public recognition as a cast member of MTV’s “The Real World: Boston”.

In a statement, President-Elect Trump described Duffy as a “respected voice” on economic growth and rural development, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the department into what he called a “Golden Age of Travel.”
“He will prioritise excellence, competence, competitiveness, and beauty when rebuilding America’s highways, tunnels, bridges, and airports. He will ensure our ports and dams serve our Economy without compromising our National Security, and he will make our skies safe again by eliminating DEI for pilots and air traffic controllers,” Trump remarked.
Duffy’s nomination has drawn particular attention within the maritime sector, as the DOT oversees the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). This agency is vital for supporting the U.S. merchant marine, advancing domestic shipbuilding, and maintaining critical maritime infrastructure.
Key challenges Duffy will face include port modernisation, strengthening the U.S. fleet and manpower development.
Given Duffy’s limited direct experience in maritime affairs, stakeholders are raising questions about how he plans to approach MARAD’s strategic objectives.
