Deputy Comptroller Etop Andrew Essien, serving as the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Revenue in the Account Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), passed away on June 25, 2024. Essien collapsed while presenting before the House Committee on Public Accounts at the National Assembly in Abuja and was pronounced dead at the National Assembly Clinic. Born on November 16, 1967, in Nsit-Ubium, Akwa Ibom State, he joined the NCS on November 27, 1989, and was nearing retirement. The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, expressed profound condolences, highlighting Essien’s exemplary service and unwavering commitment to duty.
Comrade Elegbede David, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Unit Chairman at APM Terminals Apapa, died in a motor accident on May 4, 2024. Starting his career at APMT in 2007 as a crane operator, Elegbede was known for his dedication and leadership within the union. MWUN President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, described his passing as a painful loss, noting his brilliance and intelligence as a union leader.
Architect Ferdinand Agu, former Director General of the defunct National Maritime Authority (NMA), passed away on June 7, 2024, reportedly due to a heart attack. Agu led the NMA from 2000 to 2005, overseeing significant developments in Nigeria’s maritime sector. After his tenure, he served as Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan between 2011 and 2015. Agu was honored with the national title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Comrade Wasiu Keshinro, a Trustee of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, died on December 2, 2024, after a brief illness. Keshinro was celebrated for his courage, dedication, and significant contributions to the union, particularly within the Dockworkers Branch. MWUN President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, expressed deep sorrow over his passing, acknowledging the substantial void left by his departure.
