The Port of Shanghai has become the first in the world to handle over 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in annual container throughput, solidifying its 14-year reign as the busiest container port globally and highlighting China’s growing dominance in global trade.
With a vast network spanning 350 international routes and connecting to more than 700 ports across over 200 countries and regions, the Port of Shanghai remains a critical hub for international commerce.
An official from Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG), which manages all public terminals at the port, attributed the record-breaking volume to increased export containers, a surge in international transfers, and a significant rise in ship-to-ship operations. Ship-to-ship transfers alone are projected to hit a record 60% of total port activity in 2024.
The port’s efficiency has been significantly boosted by advanced technology, particularly with the introduction of the Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal in 2017. The automated terminal has improved operational efficiency by 30% while cutting workforce requirements by 70%.
Looking forward, Shanghai Port said it is committed to sustainability. It has partnered with the ports of Los Angeles and Hamburg to create eco-friendly shipping corridors and reduce carbon emissions in maritime trade.
Luo Wenbin, SIPG’s energy manager, announced ambitious plans to establish Shanghai as a “green energy fueling center,” with a focus on expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) and green methanol capacities by 2030.
