The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued eight police officers and one civilian after their speedboat capsized near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State.
The incident occurred on December 24, 2024, when the boat, en route to Yenagoa, struck a submerged wreck and overturned.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Navy spokesperson Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu confirmed that Navy personnel deployed in the area responded promptly, ensuring the safe recovery of all nine passengers as well as three rifles belonging to the police officers.
“First aid was administered to the injured, who were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for further medical treatment,” Adams-Aliu stated.
He also noted that the submerged wreck responsible for the accident had been identified and marked to prevent future incidents.
The recovered weapons were documented and secured by the Navy and are awaiting official handover to the Bayelsa State Police Command.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, commended the swift and professional actions of the Navy personnel, highlighting the successful rescue operation as a testament to the strong collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies.
