The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has been elected as the Vice-President for Africa of the International Association for Ports & Harbours (IAPH).
The election, which took place in Tokyo, Japan, represents a significant milestone for Dantsoho and underscores Nigeria’s increasing influence in global maritime affairs.
According to NPA spokesperson, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, Dantosoho’s election is a reflection of international recognition for Nigeria’s renewed leadership in maritime development.
IAPH Secretary-General, Masahiko Furuichi, welcomed the news, stating his delight at the prospect of working with Dantsoho for many years to come.
The NPA has recently achieved major operational gains, including a significant rise in non-oil exports, which has contributed to an improved trade balance.
Data from the Nigerian Export Processing Council (NEPC) shows that non-oil exports increased by 19.59% in the first half of 2025, reaching $3.225 billion. During the same period, export volumes handled on NPA platforms rose to 4.04 million metric tonnes.
In his new role as Vice-President of IAPH, Dantsoho is expected to play a crucial part in shaping global maritime policy and promoting trade efficiency, port resilience, and sustainable growth within the maritime sector.
