The Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos has welcomed delegations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in a drive to spotlight emerging opportunities in the global maritime sector and spark early interest among young Nigerians.
Held at the Institute’s building in UNILAG, the awareness visit brought senior secondary students of the University of Lagos International School face to face with leading voices in international shipping and maritime sustainability.
Addressing students of the University of Lagos International School, Project Officer, GreenVoyage 2050, International Maritime Organization, Subaskar Sitsabeshan, delivered an engaging overview of global shipping and its central role in powering the world economy.
He outlined the IMO’s regulatory mandate, Nigeria’s strategic position in continental trade and the urgent need to curb greenhouse gas emissions across the sector. He emphasised that inspiring young people to pursue maritime studies is critical to bridging generational gaps, improving gender diversity and meeting the industry’s evolving workforce demands.
Director, Institute of Maritime Studies, Professor Mary Odukoya, and Country Director and Adviser on Sustainable Value Chains, Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tumininu Onamade, described the engagement as a timely platform to broaden awareness and spark ambition among students.
The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Foluso Afolabi-Lesi, where discussions focused on prospective collaborations, including partnerships with the World Maritime University.
