Personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service have arrested a Nigerien police officer at the Jibia–Magama border in Katsina State after he was allegedly found in possession of a pistol and ammunition.
Security sources said the suspect was intercepted at about 5.30pm on Friday at the main gate of the crossing during a routine check.
Officers reportedly questioned him on his purpose at the border, but he is said to have become unruly, prompting his detention.
A subsequent search allegedly uncovered a pistol and five rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The suspect has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force in Jibia along with the recovered weapon for further investigation.
Authorities have not yet clarified why the officer was at the border or whether he had permission to enter Nigerian territory with a firearm.
