Hapag-Lloyd is introducing a US$250-per-TEU congestion surcharge on refrigerated containers bound for Tema, Ghana, citing congestion at the destination.
The Congestion Destination Surcharge (CGD) will apply to reefer shipments originating from Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.
The new charge will take effect on all relevant sailings commencing from 5 October 2026 and applies specifically to refrigerated containers destined for Tema.
Hapag-Lloyd did not provide further details on the nature or extent of the congestion prompting the surcharge.
The move adds another cost for shippers moving temperature-sensitive cargo to Ghana’s main container gateway as the carrier responds to conditions affecting cargo handling and delivery at the port.
