Maersk Introduces $600 Peak Season Surcharge on Reefer Cargo to Ghana

Maersk Introduces $600 Peak Season Surcharge

Danish shipping giant Maersk will introduce a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of up to US$600 on refrigerated cargo moving from the Far East, Middle East and the Americas to Tema, Ghana, from 16 November 2026.

Under the new tariff, a surcharge of USD300 will apply to 20-foot refrigerated containers, while 40-foot reefer containers will attract a charge of US$600. The measure will remain in force until further notice.

For shipments originating in countries subject to regulatory requirements, the surcharge will take effect on 1 December 2026.

The additional charge is expected to increase shipping costs for businesses moving temperature-sensitive goods to Ghana through the port of Tema, although the final cost will depend on the applicable freight terms and any other relevant charges.

Maersk said the surcharge would apply to eligible shipments based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD).

Maersk said it will collect the additional charge in accordance with the agreed freight payment terms. Other applicable local charges and contingency surcharges may also be levied.

The move introduces an additional cost for shippers using Maersk’s refrigerated cargo services to Ghana, with the carrier yet to announce an end date for the surcharge.
