Transport sector key to national development—Gov. Yero

Gov. Muktar Yero of Kaduna State on Tuesday in Zaria, Kaduna State, identified the transport sector as critical to national growth and development.

Yero said this while declaring open a two-day International Conference organised by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference was “Evolving Technological Issues in Transport Safety”.

Yero, who was represented by the Commissioner for Inter-governmental Affairs, Alhaji Hussaini Abdu, commended the efforts of NITT toward providing lasting solution to Nigeria’s transport constraints.

“Transport safety is critical to the development of transport sector in particular and the nation in general.

“Transport, as you all know, is the bedrock of any meaningful development and it will certainly play a leading role in the realisation of the Nigeria’s vision 20:2020,” he said.

The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, said the conference would go a long way in generating tangible ideas toward the actualisation of effective and efficient transport system in the country.

The minister, who was represented by the Director, Mass Transit, Federal Ministry of Transport, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, described the theme of the conference as timely, especially during this `ember’ months.

Earlier, the NITT Director General, Dr Aminu Musa-Yusuf said the theme of the conference was meant to raise ideas that would engender safety in the transport sector.

Musa-Yusuf said the use of technology application would add value and meaning to modern transportation system.

The DG assured that Nigeria had the potential of becoming a major player in global transport system
