Maersk Nigeria Limited has donated ten units of new desktop computers to State Nursery and primary school, Apapa Lagos. The donation was received on behalf of the school by its outgoing Head Teacher, Mrs. Grace Idowu Palmer.
General Manager Human Resources of Maersk Nigeria Limited, Ada Onyeri said the company donated the computers to the school as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, to boost learning among the staff and students.
“This donation was done in order to allow the staff and students of this great school compete favourably in computer literacy with their contemporaries around the country.
“We will continue to support you, we will continue to be with you in order to achieve the aims and objectives of your school,” she said.
The company also presented cheque for an undisclosed amount to Mrs. Palmer as gift for her meritorious public service to the development of education in Lagos State and the nation.
In her response, the outgoing Head Teacher commended Maersk for its unwavering support to the school for several years.
“Maersk is the father of this school. They have in they have sunk borehole, renovated blocks of classrooms, donated book to our library, painted the classrooms and so many other things in the past,” she said.
In 2010, Maersk Nigeria Limited spent N13 million on the renovation of four blocks of classroom buildings, which were before then in terrible state of dilapidation, with 16 classrooms accommodating 693 pupils and 19 teachers at the school.
In 2012, it spent an additional N16 million on the renovation of more blocks of classrooms including the repair and painting of the classroom blocks, toilets and provision of 250 sets of furniture to the students.
It equally spent an additional N2 million on toilet facilities and sinking of a borehole bringing its total intervention fund to N31 million.
In recognition of its contribution to the advancement of education in the State, Maersk Nigeria Limited was honoured by the Lagos State Government in September 2010 with the State’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Lagos State Governor, Mr. BabatundeRajiFashola, represented by the Deputy Governor, said that the state was impressed by the gesture of the company for identifying education as one area that will help in the sustenance of any state.
“Two years ago, this administration brought the support our schools initiative before you as a vehicle for you to support the education sector.
“You have not only responded, you have done so overwhelmingly. You have partnered with us on this journey by which we hope to achieve human, institutional and infrastructural reform” he said.
Maersk also supports motherless babies and the less privileged in the society.
