Venezuela-flagged general cargo ship Alita sank off Colon, Panama, while awaiting scrapping at anchorage off Colon, Panama, after colliding with another vessel.
Another cargo vessel, which was manoeuvring to drop anchor off Colon, was caught in high winds and hit Alita, causing a hole at the waterline and the 4,250 dwt ship to list and partially sink.
Alita’s skeleton crew were safely evacuated and no-one injured. No water pollution was reported.
