The Seme Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Monday said it generated N655.3m as revenue in January.
The spokesman for the command, Selechang Taupyen told newsmen in Seme that the revenue was N743m lower than the 1.4bn generated in December.
“In the month of January, the revenue the command generated was lower than the previous month because of the low volume of activities witnessed due to the strike by Beninoise customs.
“Also, the high exchange rate and the uncompromising resolve of the new leadership to strict adherence to procedures and guidelines contributed to low revenue generated.
“But in all these, command will definitely improve on the revenue collection as we are determined to surpass our monthly target of 1.1 billion,” he said.
Taupyen said the command made 40 seizures in the month under review with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N20.5 million.
“The seized items include bags of rice, frozen poultry products, vegetable oil, vehicles amongst others,” he said.
The spokesman urged Nigerians to desist from smuggling and embrace legitimate trade.
“Smuggling is dangerous to the economy, so Nigerians should embrace legitimate trade because it helps to improve the economy, which in turn would benefit everyone,” he said.
