The Federal Government has disclosed plans to establish a Nigeria Transport University. The announcement is coming less than two months after it scrapped the Nigeria Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta State.
Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi announced the establishment of the university on Monday last week the opening of a regional workshop on port state control for West and Central Africa in Lagos.
He said the proposed Transport University would be set up to address the manpower needs of the transport and logistics sector.
The Minister said the Maritime University was scrapped because it became a conduit pipe under the past administration.
“If you see the amount of money that they have spent on the university, it is enough to complete the entire university and nothing has happened to the benefit of the people,” Amaechi said.
In January, while addressing federal lawmakers in Abuja, Amaechi said, “Who will attend the university? How many parents will allow their children to go to such place where it (Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency) proposed to site the university? What is the aim of the university that we cannot achieve in Oron (Maritime Academy of Nigeria) where they have all the necessary infrastructure.”
