The Association of Marine Engineers And Surveyors (AMES) has sent a press release to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY, reaffirming its synergy with the nation’s apex maritime regulator, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), in moving the maritime industry forward.
In the e-mailed press release, AMES President, Engr. Charles Uwadia, explained that the organisation is “a body of professional marine engineers and marine surveyors.”
Uwadia explained that duties of AMES members include verification of compliance with maritime regulations, including the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions delegated to recognised organisations by flag states such as NIMASA and other developed member nations of the IMO.
Referring to its recent press briefing at the International Maritime Press Centre, Apapa, Lagos, the AMES boss said: “Our press conference was called to draw attention to the protracted non-recognition of NIMASA as the designated flag authority for the compliance verification of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and the present situation of its non-implementation. The press conference was meant to emphasis the role of the flag state maritime administration, NIMASA, and its importance in ensuring that the maritime industry plays a significant role in our economy and maritime regulation compliance as an essential tool in the value chain.
We have been working collaboratively, and are desirous to continue to work, with NIMASA in the effort to move the maritime industry forward.
“The issue of IMO White List has been taken out of context. The topical issue on that day was on the ISPS Code and the way forward. During the briefing, IMO was mentioned and we recall stating that this year being the election year, the issue will be discussed at a later date.”
