The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Thursday moved to ensure peace and harmony within its fold as it honoured some of its past leaders.
Among the past leaders honoured in an elaborate ceremony at the union’s secretariat in Olodi, Apapa, Lagos, include a former President-General of the union, Comrade Uzoije Ukaummuna and a former Deputy President-General, Comrade Rasaki Bakare.
Speaking at the event, MWUN President-General, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, said under his leadership, crisis will not be allowed to fester in the union.
Adeyanju emphasised the need for synergy among members of the union to take it to greater height and enable it continue to fight for the cause of maritime workers.
“We believe in the welfare of dockworkers, so we decided to bring all the past leaders together to unite, forgive each other, and move on,” Adeyanju said.
An elated former President-General of the union, Comrade Uzoije Ukaummuna, who was unceremoniously removed from office by the Federal Government in 2001 due to his opposition to port reforms, commended Adeyanju for his effort aimed at enthroning peace in the workers’ body.
Ukaumunna said dockworkers, who he described as an integral part of MWUN, are important to national development, as the port industry is the gateway to the nation’s economy.
“Peace is better than war. We are not warring against ourselves; solidarity for the union makes us one and strong. Forgiveness is the key to more progress,” the veteran labour leader said.
