North Sea Canal ports of Amsterdam, Ijmunden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad have recorded 1.3% year-on-year growth in transhipment cargoes throughout the first half of 2015.
Meanwhile exports from Amsterdam in the first half of 2015 grew by 10% to 15.5m tonnes, and imports in decreased by 4% to 27m tonnes. The result follows a trend of decreased imports in the whole of the North Sea Canal Area, to 31.9m tonnes, down 9%, while exports rose 25% to 19.8m tonnes.
The growth was primarily driven by a 5% increase in transhipment of oil products, to 22.3m tonnes, and increases in ro-ro transhipment, up by 14% to 1.4m tonnes.
The increases mitigated a 7% fall in coal transhipment, to 9.6m tonnes, a 17% decrease in containers to 25,170 teu, or 294,000 tonnes, and a 13% decrease in agribulk to 4.1m tonnes. Other dry bulk rose 6% to 3.1m tonnes and other liquid bulk rose 20% to 1.6m tonnes.
“There has once again been growth in the first half of 2015,” said Port of Amsterdam ceo Dertje Meijer. “It is a good result. We are also optimistic about the second half of this year. We expect to once again see growth in transhipment, albeit at a slower pace than in previous years.”
