Customs Area Controller of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Frances Enwereuzor has advocated the use of barges to evacuate cargo to off dock terminals.
Speaking against the backdrop of the perennial traffic situation on the Apapa/Oshodi expressway which has assumed a worrisome dimension in the past four weeks and has hindered the transfer of goods to the terminal by road, Enwereuzor told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY in her office yesterday that the only viable option is to consider the use of barges.
Enwereuzor who assumed office at the command barely two months ago said there is an ongoing effort by the command to encourage the use of barges noting that although revenue generation is important, efficient trade facilitation is her priority.
She said her open door policy to stakeholders especially to agents operating at the command has helped her focus on efficient trade facilitation in line with the Customs global best practices.
She added that the command has also constituted a committee comprising the Customs, Licensed Customs Agents, Police, NUPENG and other stakeholders to help address the traffic situation around the terminal.
