Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali has approved the restructuring of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) command as part of effort to boost operation at the command.
Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Benjamin Aber who disclosed this on Wednesday while fielding questions from newsmen in Lagos said as part of the restructuring process, the command would no longer depend on transfer of containers to generate revenue.
According to the Controller, owners of Brawal port have commenced the dredging of the port in order to accommodate the berthing of smaller vessels to discharge consignment directly at the terminal.
“This is an ICD terminal but we also manage a lighter port, the Brawal Port which is what makes the KLT an area command. As I am talking to you, the owners of Brawal has started dredging the port for the past one month now and this is based on my discussions with him and conviction that it is better for us to actually dredge that place such that lighter vessels can come here directly and deliver consignment as it was intended originally.
“Once we establish the draught that is required for lighter vessels to come in, we will not talk about transfer of cargo again, we will be talking of cargo being imported directly into the command and the revenue target we are looking at will also be addressed,” he said.
