The 14th edition of the Ships & Ports Maritime Cup Competition, a tournament that stands as a tribute to the athletic prowess within Nigeria’s maritime industry, witnessed three electrifying encounters on Tuesday, 22nd October 2024, culminating in the Nigeria Customs Service and Nigerian Ports Authority securing quarterfinal berths.
The day was replete with spectacular performances, passion, and undying determination from the participating teams, as the competition continues to gather momentum.
The first match of the day, which kicked off promptly at 9:00 am, saw a spirited showdown between the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and the formidable five-time champions, Nigeria Customs Service. Played under the watchful eyes of excited spectators, this Group B contest delivered drama, intensity, and tactical brilliance on both sides of the pitch.
Nigeria Customs Service, whose reputation as a tournament heavyweight precedes them, opened the scoring in the 24th minute through their nimble-footed left winger, Shefiu Kabir. His dazzling pace and immaculate control mesmerised the NSC defence, and his finish was nothing short of sublime. As the first half came to a close, Customs held their slender lead, leaving NSC to ponder on ways to breach the opposition’s defence.
The second half began with renewed vigour from both sides, and as tempers flared, six yellow cards were brandished – three to each team.
In the 63rd minute, Customs doubled their lead through their prolific striker, Oluwafemi Omadara, whose clinical strike left the NSC goalkeeper grasping at thin air.
However, NSC, unwilling to cede defeat without a fight, rallied in the final stages of the game. Their resilience paid off in the 70th minute when Ganiyu Oyekunle found the back of the net, reigniting hope for the Council.
Despite their valiant efforts to restore parity, the NSC players were unable to breach the Customs defence again, and the match ended 2-1 in favour of Nigeria Customs Service.
The victory propelled Customs to the top of Group B with a maximum of six points from two matches, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
At 12:00 noon, the Stable Sports Complex bore witness to a gripping contest between Group C rivals, Micura Stevedoring Services and Dangote Ports Operations. The intensity of the encounter was palpable from the first whistle, as both sides sought to outmanoeuvre the other.
Micura, whose players showcased tactical discipline and tenacity, broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute with a beautifully crafted goal from their talismanic striker, Victor Oyoro. Donning the coveted number 9 jersey, Oyoro displayed an acute awareness of positioning and delivered a powerful strike that left the Dangote Ports goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
The rest of the match was a test of endurance, as Dangote Ports fought hard to find an equaliser, but Micura’s defence held firm. The single goal proved enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Micura Stevedoring Services, who now look poised to make a serious impact in the tournament.
As the day progressed, the 3:00 pm match between defending champions Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Trucks Transit Parks (TTP) became the centrepiece of Tuesday’s drama. Held at the NPA Sports Ground in Surulere, Lagos, the encounter unfolded under cloudy skies that soon gave way to moderate rainfall. Yet, neither the weather nor the challenging conditions could dampen the spirits of the players, especially those of NPA, who put on a masterclass performance.
NPA dominated proceedings from the outset, striking early in the 7th minute when Daniel Omogbayi found the net. Before TTP could settle, Bello Ibrahim added a second goal in the 25th minute, sending the NPA supporters into rapturous celebrations.
The second half was an onslaught by NPA, as they dismantled the TTP’s defence with precision and flair. Top striker Shadrack Charles extended NPA’s lead in the 52nd minute, followed swiftly by substitute Momoh Taiwo’s strike in the 54th minute. To complete the rout, Zakari Kabiru added the fifth goal in the 61st minute, capping off a resounding 5-0 victory for NPA. It was a performance that not only affirmed NPA’s dominance in Group C but also sent a stern warning to their competitors.
With the resounding victory over TTP, NPA sits majestically atop Group C with the maximum six points from two matches. The “Dantsoho Jets”, as the team is fondly called, have also booked their place in the quarterfinals.

Following Tuesday’s pulsating matches, the teams will take a well-deserved rest today and tomorrow, recharging their energies for what promises to be a riveting continuation of the tournament.
Friday, 25th October, will see action resume with three tantalising matches. In Group A, 2019 champions, ENL Consortium will face off against 2009 champions, the Nigerian Navy, at 9:00 am. At noon, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) will confront Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL), while in Group B, five-time champions Nigeria Customs Service will lock horns with Comet Shipping at 3:00 pm. All the matches will be held at the Stable Sports Complex in Surulere, Lagos.
